The various faces of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

PTSD has many faces

It starts with a feeling of being unwell/ anxious/unsettled/unhappy/cranky, which can lead to anger, then sadness. But beneath them all, is an inner child (the root cause) who feels unsafe, insecure, unprotected, abused, or traumatized.

I've had the opportunity to work with several clients who suffer from insomnia. What they don't realize is that insomnia is just a symptom of the anxiety they feel but can't pinpoint why.

The pandemic effect

During this COVID-19 quarantine, what we don't realize is that, despite ourselves, our bodies are grieving the loss of freedom. For our health's safety, we lost the ability to make our own choices. For many of us, choices mean freedom. The freedom/choice of going wherever, whenever and doing whatever we want.

When we don't acknowledge that our bodies need to grieve the loss they experienced, the grief finds another way to come out through physical pains.

In my clients' cases, it was anxiety and insomnia mixed in with depression, fears, indecision, shame and guilt.

After I help them release their negative emotions and create a safe space for them to acknowledge their grief, they feel much better. They go back to being focused and positive. They sleep better and find peace again.
