Fear Of Being Watched

Fear Of Being Watched

Past traumas (big or small) impact present actions

I’ve had a long-standing fear of being watched. Did you know that our body stores our experiences as neuropeptides (memories)?  Then, our brain interprets these experiences as either life-threatening or life-giving. Over time, the interpretations morph into generalized feelings/emotions.

For example, one experience of not reading well out loud in front of your grade 3 peers and got you laughed at, becomes a fear of public speaking over time. In the process, the mind/brain comes up with all sorts of seemingly logical reasons to avoid speaking in public to stay safe. Life goes on but a good chunk of your energy is consumed by this fear that might weight down on your shoulders like an invisible 5-ton boulder. This is because your senses are constantly on alert to protect you from getting emotionally hurt again.

That being said, we have the choice to reinterpret or re-frame the experience.

That is, we can re-frame the experience as an opportunity instead of a threat, an opportunity to surrender instead of a situation to be afraid of. We do truly have a ⒸⒽⓄⒾⒸⒺ.

The process

But first, we have to be aware there is a choice before we come to terms with making it. In other words, we make what is unconscious conscious first.

That steps involve noticing how we feel around certain things or activities. Then, trace back to the event(s) in our past that might have created those emotions. Next, we pay attention to how this past traumatic event is affecting our lives negatively. From there, we consciously make the choices of stopping the negative influence the past has on the present.

This is when the power and effectiveness of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT tapping), a central feature of Energy Psychology, become remarkable.

Real-life situation

Let me give you a concrete and recent example from my own experience.

I’ve had a long-standing fear of being on video. Then, recently, thanks to the right question from my coach, I recalled a specific event from my childhood that caused that deep fear. I was under the age of 10. This means I have lived with this fear for more than 4 decades. It was from a traumatic event during which someone hidden in the dark scrutinized me. He watched me through a small opening. Days later, he told me and unbeknownst to myself, in that exact moment, my fear of being watched was born. I felt deeply violated and judged by his voyeuristic behaviour.

In the eyes of my younger self, I associated his eyes to the camera lenses, thus the fears of being watched. Over time, that fear morphed into being afraid of being watched on video.

In addition to the avoidance of doing videos, the inner critic would pop up frequently with such judgement as “only losers don’t do video” or “yeah, you are going to fail miserably if you try to do a video”. Of this entire video-fearing situation, this is the hardest part to deal with, as once the inner critic starts talking, it rarely stops.

As such, all these years, I have dozens, no 100’s, of reasons that seemed logical to stay away from being in videos for public showings. Reasons such as “I don’t look natural enough”, “My voice isn’t clear enough”, “my English isn’t fluent enough”, “nobody wants to hear what I have to say”, “I don’t have enough value to add to a video”, “video is not my cup of tea”, or “I like writing more”, etc..

The healing

Energy Psychology is magical though. In one single session using EFT tapping, I clear the fears. I no longer feel resistance to doing videos. I no longer give any importance to the reasons that used to hold me back. Instead, I now look forward to curate content that I can put into videos, and show myself to the world through that medium. My thoughts are now running towards “what subject can I talk about in a video?”, “how long should my video be?”, “what prop can I use in a video to enhance the content of such and such topic?”. No longer do I reject or avoid the idea of making videos. Furthermore, I feel completely at ease thinking about doing videos instead of feeling like it’s an insurmountable chore.

As Louise Hay said, we have the power to heal our lives, and we need to remember that. We think so often that we are helpless, but we’re not. We always have the choice and the power of healing. Claim and use your power.
